The Myths of Heartburn: Acidic Foods

A common old wives’ heartburn remedy is to reduce the consumption of certain type of foods which are considered ‘acidic’ to the body. The reason is that these foods can increase the acidity of the stomach and cause acid reflux. These include acidic foods such citrus fruits like lemons and oranges, chilli and tomatoes. Acidic foods can indeed aggravate heartburn but not by increasing stomach acidity. Rather they do it by irritating an already affected gullet.

At Stanford University School of Medicine, a detailed research on heartburn revealed that by eliminating caffeine, citrus fruits and spicy foods would not neither eliminated heartburn symptoms nor reduce acid levels in the esophagus.

Actually, by practising two lifestyle changes, they seem to help in reducing heartburn. The first is eating less, resulting in reduced pressure in the abdomen. The second change is to elevating the head of the bed to prevent the stomach contents from entering the esophagus during sleep.
