Surprising Causes of Your Heartburn Problem

Acid RefluxYou’ve shunned the Buffalo wings, the colas (even the diet ones), the five-alarm chili (congrats, by the way). And you still feel like you’ve been eating fire for the past three days. What’s up with that? Your heartburn may come from these surprising culprits:

1. Your medicine cabinet. Medications could weaken your lower esophageal sphincter causing stuff in your stomach to creep back up into your esophagus, which ignites heartburn fast.

One common culprit: over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen or aspirin. Another: antihistamines, be they over-the-counter or prescription. Others: birth control pills and antispasmodics.

Talk to your doctor if you think your meds may be contributing to your heartburn (don’t discontinue them yourself, or you may be asking for other problems).

2. Your family tree.
Does Dad pop antacids like candy? Does Sis feel the burn after every latte?

Genetics may account for up to 43 percent of your susceptibility to heartburn. Don’t just live with it: Besides being more uncomfortable than wearing high heels that are two sizes too small, recurrent heartburn can lead to chronic inflammation in your esophagus, which has been linked to cancer (by the way, those two baby aspirins a day you take decrease this cancer risk by 40 percent).

Talk to your doc if you can’t shake the burn even if you’re staying away from spicy and acidic foods, not reclining right after a meal and walking regularly (walking cuts the amount of time that stomach acid touches the esophagus).

Severe reflux also may contribute to sinusitis, asthma, bad breath and bad teeth. So extinguishing the fire makes your whole body, not just your gut, healthier.
