Older Remedies For Acid Reflux Heartburn Problems

herbalcartoonA cup of coffee used to be risky business for Karla Neutzler. She has acid reflux.

“Basically I had no life when it came to eating.  I could not eat Italian food, I could not eat Mexican food.  Coffee was always challenging. Red wine, totally out,” she said.

Reflux is caused by stomach acid rising up in the esophagus. The latest prescription drugs block acid production, but there is an opposite approach too. Fighting acid with acid, hydrochloric acid, the same chemical that can dissolve metal, is also found in gastric juices.

Dr. Matt Chalmers believes some people don’t have enough of it.

“Lots of times when we have too much stress, our body stops producing hydrochloric acid.  So, since the stomach is basically empty, it ends up getting too much lactic acid in it.  That’s what causes the burning feeling,” said Chalmers. “That’s why we need to add in the external sources of hydrochloric acid.”

This hydrochloric acid supplement is made from beets. Another alternative is pink salt

“Pink salt allows your body to create its own hydrochloric acid so that you don’t have to supplement with external acid,” said Chalmers.

Baylor gastroenterologist Lawrence Schiller says hydrochloric acid was basically abandoned traditional medicine decades ago. And, there’s no scientific evidence it, or pink salt, work,” said Schiller.

“Absolutely, but most of the people who are saying they work are also trying to sell them to you.  And I’d always be a little skeptical about people selling you something and making a health claim at the same time,” said Dr. Lawrence Schiller, gastroenterologist.

After trying prescription drugs, Neutzler is now sold on the all-natural: pink salt and hydrochloric acid supplements.

Hydrochloric acid is not recommended for those with peptic ulcers. The supplements can be found online or at natural food stores.
