News: How Latest Incision-less Procedure Can Acid Reflux
Do you know that chronic severe heartburn is left untreated can lead to esophageal cancer? Currently, the number of people getting esophageal cancer is getting higher than before.
Recently, some doctors use a new procedure which allows them to fix chronic acid reflux problem without doing any incision.
Interesting, indeed!
Charles Hendery was of the latest chronic heartburn patient who did that. He suffered severe heartburn problem for more than 30 years and he spent most of his life eating bland diet and popping antacids to allievate the pain.
“I was taking probably Maalox three times a day and I was probably taking Tums almost like candy,” said Henderly.
During that period, he could only sleep on a chair.
“I’d try to go to bed and a half hour after I’d lay my head down and close my eyes, I would almost have like a regurgitation in my mouth, so I’d come downstairs and get in the recliner,” said Henderly.
Come this new technology that use device called esophyx that can perform new incision-less procedure. The device like a tube goes diwn through the mouth and into the stomach. Surgeons then rebuild the valve at bottom of the esophagus where it enters the stomach. That stops acid reflux immediately.
According to Dr. Scott Melvin, gastrointestinal surgeon who did this procedure said that most patient recovered well and are able to get off the medication.
This kind of procedure are suitable for patients who could not continue their medication because of the side effects or the medication does not provide relief to their heartburn symptoms. Or, they simply do not want to take any more pill.
Currently, Henderly is now down to just one pill a day. He can eat whatever he wants even the spicy foods. As for his sleep problem, he can sleep soundly in bed.
Esophyx was just released in the U.S. last October, so doctors don’t yet have data on the long-term results, but the procedure is now available locally.
