Recently, a pregnant reader asked me this question: I’ve felt a terrible burning sensation in my chest after eating. Is it heartburn?

Answer: Most likely. It is very common for women to experience heartburn for the first time during pregnancy — and though it’s generally harmless, but it can be quite uncomfortable.

Heartburn (also called acid indigestion or acid reflux) is a burning sensation that often extends from the bottom of the breastbone to the lower throat. It’s caused by some of the hormonal and physical changes in your body.

During pregnancy, the placenta produces the hormone progesterone, which relaxes the smooth muscles of the uterus. This hormone also relaxes the valve that separates the esophagus from the stomach, allowing gastric acids to seep back up, which causes that unpleasant burning sensation.

Progesterone also slows down the wavelike contractions of your esophagus and intestines, making digestion sluggish. Later in pregnancy, your growing baby crowds your abdominal cavity, pushing the stomach acids back up into the esophagus.

Many women start experiencing heartburn and other gastrointestinal discomforts in the second half of pregnancy. Unfortunately, it usually comes and goes until your baby is born.

You can use ginger to help you.

For years, Traditional Chinese Medicine healers have used ginger to cure all kinds of stomach aches and intestinal troubles.

Joe and Teresa Graedon, authors of The People’s Pharmacy, say ginger has been used for heartburn, nausea, upset stomach, motion sickness and other problems. They recommend making your own ginger tea from fresh ginger root.

Ginger Drink Recipe
Shave off an inch of the skin, then grate the shaved ginger into a mug. Pour boiling water over it and let it steep for a few minutes, then strain through a sieve to remove the grated ginger. Add sweetener and lemon to taste.

“If you sip it slowly, this ginger tea will definitely stimulate saliva production and also help wash down any residual acid in the esophagus,” the Graedons say.

The Graedons’ readers also have had success with Tazo Chai organic spiced black tea and eating candied ginger, which they say works as well as acid-suppressing drugs on their heartburn.

Other recommendations: crystallized ginger and ginger snaps.

New moms might find relief from morning sickness by sucking on ginger candy. And if you’re prone to motion sickness, take some along on your next plane trip in case of turbulence.

Studies have shown that about 80% of pregnant women suffer from heartburn during their pregnancy. Although you’d like to believe it is because your baby is going to have a head full of glorious hair, like grandma said, you would trade those locks for a nice cue ball in a second if it would guarantee you could eat a decent meal with no repercussions. However, if you could have a baby with glorious hair and a heartburn-free meal, too?

In Brazil, a recent study has shown that acupuncture can help to relieve indigestion and heartburn in pregnant women. According to HealthDay News, heartburn was reduced by half in 75% of women who were treated with acupuncture. Women who received the treatments also reported eating and sleeping better. 15 of the women in the acupuncture group said their eating habits improved by 50%, compared with fewer than 1 in 3 in the group who were treated with conventional methods. 14 women who received acupuncture said their sleep improved by 50%, compared with just 1 in 4 in the other group. The full report is published in the June issue of Acupuncture in Medicine.

While this may be good news, the study is controversial with some doctors uncomfortable with the idea of conducting acupuncture on pregnant women.

Just be sure to discuss it with your OB before starting any alternative treatments.

On the outside, you are glowing from impending motherhood but on the inside, you are burning from heartburn.

Acid reflux is common during pregnancy, said Dr. Anish Sheth, a gastroenterologist and assistant professor of medicine at Yale University.

According to Dr Sheth, the elevated progestin hormones often cause the pressure of the sphincter to go down and with the increase of the growing uterus which predisposes the women to acid reflux.
The good news that the symptoms of heartburn acid reflux which you get during your pregnancy is temporary. It will be gone once the baby is born.

There are a few ways that you can treat acid reflux during pregnancy.

The safest medicines are H2 receptor blockers, Sheth said, which are sold over-the-counter. These medicines include Pepcid AC and Zantac.

H2 receptors work by shutting off the production of acid in the stomach and are effective in cases of mild reflux.

The effects of more potent drugs like Nexium or Protonix (proton pump inhibitors, or PPIs) have not yet been studied on pregnant women.

Added bonuses of H2 receptors: They are relatively inexpensive and provide longer-lasting relief than antacids.

However, they do not take effect as quickly, so Sheth suggests women take them a half-hour before meals or at bedtime.

Sheth said it is OK to take antacids like Rolaids, Tums and Maalox, but anything with magnesium in it should be avoided in the third trimester because it can cause premature labor. He said pregnant women should never take oral suspension medicines like Pepto Bismol.

===>>>Tips To Reduce Your Heartburn Symptoms During Pregnancy

If you prefer not to take any kind of medicine during pregnancy, there are some natural ways to relieve heartburn.

One popular method is to eat licorice, because it is flavored with anise, which aids in digestion.

Another popular method — though doctors don’t know where it originated, and there is little evidence to back up the claim — is to drink apple cider vinegar.

Taking papaya can also help to relieve the acid reflux symptoms without harming your body and baby.

However, when it comes to pregnancy and acid reflux, “it comes down to lifestyle,” Sheth said. “Stay upright for several hours after eating and avoid triggers like caffeine and chocolate. For the majority of patients, that will control it.”

We have learn how heartburn symptoms happen during pregnancy. Although you may not be able to eliminate heartburn completely, here are some tips you can use to minimize your discomfort:

- Avoid food and beverages that are known as heartburn triggers which can cause you gastrointestinal distress. The usual suspects are carbonated drinks; alcohol (which you should avoid anyway during pregnancy); caffeine; chocolate; acidic foods like citrus fruits and juices, tomatoes, mustard, and vinegar; processed meats; mint products; and spicy, highly seasoned, fried, or fatty foods. Drinks containing caffeine (coffee, tea, cola) because these can relax the LES and allow acid to reflux back into the esophagus.

- Don’t eat big meals. Eat several small meals throughout the day instead. Take your time eating and chew thoroughly.

- Although it is important to drink plenty of water (8-10 glasses daily) along with other fluids, it is best to avoid drinking large quantities of fluids during meals. Too much fluids can distend your stomach. This will put more pressure on LES and forcing it to open inappropriately. Drink some of your fluids in between meals.

- Chewing gum help to stimulate your salivary glands, and saliva can help neutralize acid. Suggestion: try chewing gum after eating.

- Don’t eat close to bedtime. Give yourself at least three hours to digest before you lie down.

- Sleep with your head and shoulders propped up with a wedge pillow or elevate the head of your bed six to eight inches. By elevating your upper body using gravity will help to keep your stomach acids where they belong and will aid your digestion. For more tips on easing nighttime heartburn, read this article – Night-Time Heartburn.

- Wear loose, comfortable clothing and avoid any tightness around your waist and stomach.

- Bend at the knees instead of at the waist. By bending at the waist, it will put more pressure on your stomach.

- Gain a sensible amount of weight and stay within the guidelines your doctor suggests. By putting on too much weight, it will put more pressure on your stomach, and can force stomach contents through the LES and into your esophagus. Your heartburn symptoms will become more severe.

- Don’t smoke. Smoking creates a host of serious health problems especially when you are pregnant. Smoking increases your stomach acidity. Read more about The Connection Between Acid Reflux and Smoking

- Before you take any over-the-counter medication, it is best to check with your doctor first. Some antacid that contains magnesium or calcium may ease discomfort because some brands contain aluminum or aspirin or are high in sodium and thus, it may affect your unborn baby.

If these measures don’t work for you, it is best to talk to your caregiver about prescription heartburn medications that are safe during pregnancy.

Heartburn (also known as acid indigestion or acid reflux) is a burning sensation that often extends from the bottom of the breastbone to the lower throat. It’s caused by some of the hormonal and physical changes in your body.

Why?

During pregnancy, the placenta produces the hormone progesterone, which relaxes the smooth muscles of the uterus. This hormone also relaxes the valve that separates the esophagus from the stomach, allowing gastric acids to seep back up, which causes that unpleasant burning sensation.

At the same time, progesterone slows down the wavelike contractions of your esophagus and intestines, making digestion sluggish. With the increased levels of hormones in your body while pregnant can soften the ligaments that normally keep the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) tightly closed. If the LES relaxes at inappropriate times, food and stomach acids can reflux back up into your esophagus and throat.

Later in pregnancy, your growing baby crowds your abdominal cavity, pushing stomach contents through the LES and into your esophagus.

Many women start experiencing heartburn and other gastrointestinal discomforts in the second half of pregnancy.

Unfortunately, it usually comes and goes until your baby is born. Heartburn during pregnancy occurs for a number of reasons.

Please consult your doctor first before you start any heartburn medication.

Do you know a mother who takes acid-blockers for heartburn during pregnancy put her baby to risk? she has increased the risk of her baby developing asthma by 50 percent. My goodness!

According to an analysis of Swedish healthcare registries done by Elizabeth Yen, MD, of the Department of Gastroenterology and Nutrition, Children’s Hospital Boston, and Instructor of Pediatrics, Harvard School of Medicine, Boston, Massachusetts, she found that taking acid-blockers to counter heartburn associated with pregnancy upped the odds of the baby developing asthma regardless of the type of drug taken.

Currently, the effect was only seen for asthma. There was no increased risk for other allergic diseases such as food allergies or atopic dermatitis.

Dr Yen said:

“This effect was preserved irrespective of the type of acid-blocking drug, time of exposure during pregnancy, and maternal history of allergy. This provides the first evidence of a novel potential risk factor for the development of allergic diseases in children.”

So, it is better to take a simple more holistic approach to resolve your heartburn problem especially you are pregnant with your baby. Check out Jeff Martin’s holistic approach towards heartburn for pregnant more.
