At the Society of Nuclear Medicine’s annual meeting, a study was shown that the use of imaging technology may have found the cause of acid reflux disease.

Acid reflux is a condition in which some of the esophageal muscles don’t work properly, which allows stomach acids to rise up in the esophagus. Individuals with the disease experience heartburn and could be at risk of developing more severe health complications.

Approximately 1 in 14 people who reside in the U.S. suffer from acid reflux on a daily basis.

In an effort to better detect the cause of acid reflux, a team of researchers performed upright and horizontal screenings of 49 patients who have been diagnosed or have shown symptoms of the condition. They examined how esophageal muscles were able to perform and how the condition was affected by in both positions.

The investigators discovered that seven patients who experienced a mild case of acid reflux also suffered from esophageal motility, a lack of muscle strength in the esophagus. A total of 19 patients with a moderate case were diagnosed with the complication while lying down, and 10 individuals with a severe case of acid reflux all suffered esophageal motility while lying down.

Researchers concluded that discovering that these symptoms become worse while lying down may prove beneficial to developing medicines, which could improve long-term relief in acid reflux patients.

If I’m going to a dinner party, I’ll make the occasional exception, but my general rule is to eat nothing after 8pm.

That’s because eating at night substantially raises your risk of acid reflux. You produce more stomach acid after a meal and the valve between your stomach and your oesophagus also relaxes.

‘So if you’re lying down relatively soon afterwards, acid is more likely to get into your gullet. ‘as well as being uncomfortable in the short term, there are problems associated with long-term acid reflux, namely oesophageal cancer.

‘It’s become a bit of an epidemic, with the incidence growing faster than most other forms of cancer. the problem is that it’s hard to treat and the prognosis tends to be poor. Ideally, eat your evening meal at least four hours before lying down.’

A recent study indicates that many individuals who maybe suffering from acid reflux or heartbun or GERD often wake up at middle of night, even though they may not have any symptoms.

According to Reuters, researchers studied 39 people with GERD, along with nine healthy adults. After monitoring the participants overnight, scientists found that 90 percent of GERD patients woke up at least once during the night, compared to 78 percent of the healthy comparison group.

In addition, they found that just 16 percent of sleep disruptions in GERD patients were caused by heartburn symptoms.

GERD is a chronic digestive disease that occurs when stomach acid flows back into the food pipe. Symptoms include heartburn that occurs more than two times per week.

Among some ways to combat heartburn include avoiding acidic and other foods known to trigger symptoms, cutting back on portion sizes, eating slowly, avoiding eating within a few hours of going to sleep, raising the head of the bed on an angle, adding living enzymes to the diet and wearing loose-fitting clothing.

Antacids and H2 blocker medications are often used to treat GERD. The Mayo Clinic reports that among the natural remedies believed to treat it are herbal remedies including licorice, slippery elm, chamomile and marshmallow, as well as acupuncture and practicing relaxation techniques.

Heartburn medication can help you to stop your symptoms temporarily. By using more natural holistic method, it can help to eliminate the problem .

Heartburn can be extremely problematical- both painful and fatiguing. People in general suffer from some degree of heartburn. Medical data indicates that most people get occasional heartburn at some time in their life. However many of these heartburn episodes go away by themselves or with the help of a minimum of medication. Severe heartburn is a sign of a more advanced illness known to medical personnel as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Here, conventional medicine is often weak in providing any positive benefit for severe Heartburn cases.

What is the real, underlying problem?

The weakening or the instability of the muscle separating the esophagus from the stomach means that stomach juices including acid reflux back into the esophagus. Ulceration of the esophagus is then the result because of the acid corrosion caused by the acidic stomach matter. The root of the problem is therefore typically the sphincter or one-way muscular valve that should block off the stomach from the esophagus. In severe cases, there may even be a pre-cancer condition known to doctors as Barrett’s esophagus, and which necessitates immediate medical attention.

Other problematical factors of heartburn

It is sometimes incorrectly identified as asthma, which makes the situation that much more, complicated. This is because if the backward reflux of acid contents reaches the upper part of the esophagus, then the result may be fits of wheezing, hoarseness and drive coughing.

Which people are more at risk of contracting heartburn?

There are several medical conditions that will bump up the risk of serious heartburn. Risk factors include hernias and diabetes as well as incorrect eating, such as too much fast food. Diseases of the auto immune system such as Raynaud Phenomenon, sceloderma and the CREST syndrome can all negatively impact this condition.

The right heartburn remedy

Because they do not take into consideration the long term causes, and may even have serious drawbacks when they are taken, conventional medicines may even worsen the situation. And as most medications prescribed by physicians target only the symptoms of heartburn, they only really have a role to play in short term relief.

Heartburn sufferers are advised to limit or avoid intake of food that is fatty, high in caffeine, high in alcohol content, in chocolate, mint or sherbet, as well as eating less of the acid-type foods such as tomatoes, oranges, spinach, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cabbage. Recent investigations have suggested that a correct diet, a healthy lifestyle and a holistic program which may include herbs and vitamins supplements are what is required to permanently cure severe GERD-related heartburn.

Question: Could the pain I’m feeling be something other than reflux?
Answer: Symptoms of reflux may be confused with other conditions such as heart disease, gallbladder disease and other gastrointestinal disorders.

Question: Are there ways to prevent this disease? Are there ways to control or cure the problem? Is there a risk of cancer associated with reflux?
Answer: Reflux can be treated by lifestyle modifications including weight loss, smoking cessation, alcohol avoidance and avoiding eating meals late in the day. Elevating the head of your bed on a couple of blocks may help nocturnal symptoms. When symptoms are not controlled with these lifestyle modifications, acid suppressing medications can be utilized. The most common medications are proton pump inhibitors such as Prilosec, Nexium and Protonix.

Anti-reflux surgery should be considered in some patients, including those who require lifelong medical therapy for reflux. It also might be needed for patients who have persistent symptoms in spite of medications or those that have developed complications from their reflux such as strictures, esophageal ulcers, and large hiatal hernias. Anti-reflux surgery has the advantage of “curing” reflux as the surgery will recreate the lower esophageal sphincter and prevent acid from leaving the stomach. The most common anti-reflux surgery is called a Nissen fundoplication. This surgery may be performed utilizing minimally invasive techniques. Postoperative pain is minimal and the procedure can be an outpatient one. Patients will have resolution of their reflux symptoms immediately following the procedure as the new valve begins to work immediately.

Question: What is gastroesophageal reflux, or acid reflux, disease?
Answer: Gastroesophageal reflux disease is a condition in which the contents of the stomach will reflux out of the stomach into the esophagus. Although most individuals will experience some occasional episodes of reflux, it is considered gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) when the reflux occurs on a frequent and recurring basis.

Question: How and why do people get this disease?
Answer: Reflux is most commonly caused by a weakened valve at the lower esophagus called the lower esophageal sphincter. Other causes may be related to abnormalities of how the esophagus moves or delayed gastric emptying. Obesity is a common cause of reflux symptoms. Other causes include caffeine and red wine, and some medications will reduce the pressure of the lower esophageal sphincter resulting in reflux.

Question: What are the symptoms of reflux?
Answer: Common symptoms include heartburn, regurgitation, chest pain and a bitter taste in the back of the throat. Many patients are not able to lie down without having reflux or regurgitation. Difficulty swallowing may be seen in patients that develop either a stricture or narrowing of their esophagus from reflux or those that have developed a hiatal hernia.
